Legacy and Máirtín de Cógáin |
This annual show is a collaborative effort of Legacy and their friend and frequent guest on stage, Máirtín de Cógáin. The show is family-fiendly, blending a mix of Irish holiday carols and songs of the songs of the season, lively Irish instrumentals on flute and fiddle for good measure.
Máirtín de Cógáin (MAR-teen de KOH-GONE) originally hails from Carrigaline, County Cork, and serves as the emcee for the program.
The songs and stories told are drawn from seasonal traditions of the Celtic nations, with an emphasis on rural Co. Cork. Despite being very old music, most of the songs will be new to American listeners.
Máirtín's narration brings to life the customs traditional to growing up in West Cork, plus stories and explorations to seasonal customs from neighboring Celtic lands.
Says Keith Harrelson of Moonlight on the Mountian:
Yes, Virginia, there ARE other ways to celebrate the end of the year besides standing in long lines at big-box stores, or sitting in traffic... for centuries now, the merry folks of The Emerald Isle have rung out the auld with story and song, never better preserved or presented than by this highly-respected group and their collaborator, the storyteller Máirtín de Cógáin.
With fiddle, guitar, drum, whistles, and voice, Legacy recalls generations of Irish holiday tradition in a manner entirely befitting this year and next. It's a special program they've worked up especially for the season--- start now to make your Merry Christmas last that much longer!
